Nainital in Winter: Travel Guide, Packing Tips and Best Places to Stay

A practical winter Nainital guide — what to pack, where to sleep when nights hit 0°C, and how to enjoy the lake in the cold.

Winter light on hills near Bhimtal and Nainital

Winter in Nainital runs roughly November through February, with December and January as the serious cold. The lake is still the centre of the trip. The difference is that a bad hotel will ruin the evenings, and a good jacket will make the mornings.

Winter weather in short

November: crisp, often clear, cold nights. December–January: coldest, possible snow. February: still winter, slightly kinder afternoons. Details: February weather, January.

Packing tips

  • Thermal inner layer (top and bottom) for January
  • Insulated jacket, not only a hoodie
  • Warm cap, gloves, woollen socks
  • Closed shoes with grip
  • Moisturiser and lip balm
  • One “room jumper” you never take into the rain or snow

Do not pack as if you are going to Manali’s high ski slopes. Do not pack as if you are staying in Goa.

Best places to stay in winter (by problem you are solving)

**Warmth first.** Mallital has more solid, older hotels and easier access to the lake without a long uphill walk in the wind. Ask about room heating — blower, oil heater, or central. “Heater on request” sometimes means a small coil that trips the fuse.

**Views.** Ayarpatta and ridge hotels look spectacular and feel colder. Fine if heating is real.

**Quiet.** Tallital and farther pockets are calmer at night; check walking distance to food if you do not want a cab for every dinner.

We verify stays in person for the hotel booking list. In winter we care more about heating and hot water than about a perfect postcard angle.

What to do

Boating continues on many winter days if the lake is calm. Ropeway depends on wind. Temple, Mall Road, Snow View, Tiffin Top on clear days. Short days mean you start earlier than in May.

Getting here

Nearest airport is Pantnagar, then a road transfer. Trains to Kathgodam remain the workhorse. Winter fog is a plains problem more than a Nainital ghat problem.

Winter is the season we like recommending to people who have already seen Nainital in summer. It is also a fine first trip if you like cold and dislike queues.
