Nainital town and lake under monsoon clouds

Monsoon in Nainital usually begins by late June and runs through September. The lake does not shut. The town does not empty completely. What changes is pace: more indoor time, greener slopes, and a Mall Road that feels like a hill station again instead of a holiday queue.

Monsoon months, month by month

**Late June.** First real showers. Summer crowds still around. Temperature still on the warmer side.

**July.** Often the wettest start. Regular rain, thunderstorms, mist on the ridges. See Nainital weather in July 2026.

**August.** Cloudier, sometimes drizzle for hours. Photogenic, quieter, limited long-distance views. Full note: Nainital weather in August 2026.

**September.** Rain eases through the month. Hills stay green. Many locals call this the best monsoon window if you want both colour and a few clear mornings.

Typical monsoon temperatures

  • Day: 15°C to 22°C (July–August often nearer 22°C–24°C on a mild spell)
  • Night: 10°C to 16°C

You will not freeze. You will get wet if you dress for Delhi AC.

Are roads safe?

The highway from Kathgodam is the main monsoon risk, not the lakeside walk. Travel in daylight. Keep buffer time. If IMD or local news flags a very heavy spell, delay a Sattal loop rather than forcing it.

Landslides can block a stretch for a few hours. They rarely cancel a well-planned long weekend outright — they just punish tight Delhi departures.

What to do in monsoon Nainital

Boating happens between showers. Temples and markets work in any weather. Cafés with a window on the lake become the day’s main activity — we listed favourites in best cafés this monsoon.

Adventure days (China Peak, long treks) need a flexible morning. Ropeways may halt in wind.

Who should skip monsoon

Anyone whose only goal is Himalayan snow views from Snow View. Anyone unwilling to change shoes twice a day. Families with very small children if you cannot accept a washed-out outdoor slot.

Monsoon is a yes if you want off-season rates and do not treat rain as a failed trip. Check a 15-day outlook in the week you travel — mountain forecasts shift quickly, but they still beat arriving blind.
