Delhi to Nainital Road Trip: Scenic Route, Food Stops and Tips

A Delhi to Nainital road trip is one of North India’s standard hill runs. The scenic bit is concentrated at the end. The rest is a well-fed highway. Plan it that way and the day works.

Route in outline

Delhi → Ghaziabad / Hapur corridor → Moradabad → Rampur → Rudrapur → Haldwani → Kathgodam → Nainital. About 300–320 km. Distance expectations.

Leave before dawn on weekends. Friday night starts from NCR are how people arrive at midnight, angry.

Scenic stretch

Once you leave Kathgodam, the road climbs through forested ghats. This is the part worth a slow window-down moment — not the Moradabad bypass. In monsoon the same stretch is the part to drive in daylight. Monsoon notes.

Food stops

Highway dhabas and branded plazas appear regularly until the hills. Eat a proper meal on the plains; hill-road restaurants just before Nainital are uneven and you will want dinner on Mall Road anyway. Carry water and something plain if anyone gets car-sick.

Pick one sit-down stop, not five “quick chai” delays that add 90 minutes.

Is a road trip “better” than the train?

It is better if you have 4+ people, lots of bags, and a driver who is not already tired. It is worse if you think it is a 5-hour jaunt. Many families still sleep on the Ranikhet Express (or similar) and taxi up — less heroic, more human.

Arrive, walk the lake, eat. The road trip ends at the water, not at a viewpoint squeezed into the same evening.
